Innovation in the fields of embedded systems and the Internet of Things is still driving the creation of small, potent boards with a broad variety of applications. One such intriguing device that's garnering attention on Kickstarter is SB Components' StackyFi. StackyFi is a feature-rich device that is made to be flexible and compatible. It is expected to revolutionize small-scale computing and networking.

StackyFi - A Versatile ESP32-S3 WiFi and Bluetooth IoT Board

StackyFi - Design and Build

At its core, StackyFi leverages the ESP32-S3-WROOM-1 wireless module, boasting a dual-core Tensilica LX7 processor running up to 240 MHz with 512KB of SRAM. This setup ensures robust performance suitable for both WiFi 4 and Bluetooth LE 5 connectivity. The board is elegantly compact, matching the size of a Raspberry Pi Zero, and includes a 40-pin GPIO header that supports most Raspberry Pi HAT expansion boards. This feature opens up a plethora of expansion possibilities, enhancing its versatility for various IoT projects.

StackyFi's Key Features:

StackyFi doesn't skimp on features despite its size. It includes:

  • Memory and Storage: While specific details on PSRAM and flash storage are yet to be disclosed, the board offers ample room for storing data and running applications.
  • Camera and Imaging: Equipped with a microSD card slot and an FPC connector compatible with the OV2640 camera module, StackyFi supports image capture and machine learning applications, catering to projects that require visual data processing.
  • Connectivity and Interfaces: With dual USB Type-C ports—one for general use and another dedicated to serial debugging—the board ensures convenient connectivity options. An onboard IMU sensor and an RGB LED further enhance its functionality, catering to a wide range of sensor-based and feedback-driven applications.
  • Power Options: StackyFi can be powered via its USB-C ports or a LiPo battery, providing flexibility in deployment and usage scenarios.

StackyFi's Programming and Compatibility

Built upon open-source principles, StackyFi supports Arduino IDE, MicroPython, and CircuitPython programming environments, making it accessible to a broad community of developers and hobbyists. This openness extends to its design, ensuring that users can explore and expand its capabilities according to their project needs.

SB Components has launched StackyFi on Kickstarter with attractive rewards starting at $29 for the board alone and $33 bundled with the OV2640 camera module. Shipping is expected to commence in November, with reasonable shipping rates of 7 GBP for the UK and approximately $19.50 for international destinations.

StackyFi represents a significant leap forward in the realm of IoT development boards, combining powerful features with compact design and extensive compatibility. Whether you are a seasoned developer or an enthusiast looking to delve into IoT projects, StackyFi offers a compelling solution backed by solid performance and broad community support.
