The mobile Linux distribution postmarketOS v22.06 includes quicker updates and UI enhancements

PostmarketOS is a Linux distribution geared for cellphones and other ARM-based devices. Originally conceived as a project to give obsolete phones a new lease of life by providing them with a long-term operating system, the current version of postmarketOS now officially supports 27 devices, including phones, tablets, and single-board computers.

Upgrading from one version of the Alpine Linux-based operating system to the next has also become easier.

postmarketOS v22.06 is the first version of the operating system to have a release upgrading function, this is the case. Want to upgrade from a previous version to v22.06? Simply follow the instructions on the postmarketOS Wiki to install and run the upgrading script.

While not officially supported, the creators claim that you may use the script to transition from one version of postmarketOS to another without having to upgrade. If you wish to utilize a stable release, you could migrate from postmarketOS edge (which includes bleeding edge, often unstable software) to v22.06 (which may not have all the features available in the edge version).

Support for two new devices (the Samsung Galaxy S III (i9300) smartphone and the SHIFT6mq smartphone) has been added to postmarketOS v22.06, as well as modifications to the three officially supported users interface variants.

If you use Sxmo to install a build of postmarketOS, you'll get version 1.9.0 of that UI, which includes support for device profiles, better Bluetooth compatibility, and other enhancements. If you choose Plasma Mobile, you'll get version 22.04 of the UI, which includes a lot of UI changes and app upgrades.

If you choose Phosh, you'll get version 0.17.0, which includes a handful of minor improvements. But there's more to come: once Phosh 0.20.0 is ready, it'll be backported to postmarketOS v22.06 through a service pack update, adding support for swipe gestures, lock screen enhancements, and more.
