Banana Pi BPI-CM4 compute module with Amlogic A311D is pin-compatible with Raspberry Pi CM4.

New Raspberry Pi Compute Module 4 Alternative From Banana Pi

When it comes to naming their devices, the producers of the Banana Pi range of single-board computers definitely take some cues from the Raspberry Pi Foundation. Some of their designs are clearly influenced by the Raspberry Pi.

For example, the future Banana Pi BPI-CM4 compute module not only looks like a Raspberry Pi Compute Module 4, but it also has the same connection pins, indicating that it should function with Raspberry Pi CM4 carrier boards. That does not, however, imply that the two compute modules are equal.

The Raspberry Pi CM4 has a Broadcom BCM2711 quad-core ARM Cortex-A72 CPU, whilst the Banana Pi BPI-CM4 uses an Amlogic A311D chip that includes:

  • 4 cores ARM Cortex-A73 CPU
  • 2 cores ARM Cortex-A53 CPU
  • ARM Mali-G52 MP4 graphics
  • Neural Processing Unit with 5 TOPS performance.
  • More memory options (/2GB/4GB), suitable for large data compilation
  • One display(HDMI) supports resolutions up to 4K (RasPi CM4 is a dual display)
  • 6G eMMC flash (Max 128G)
  • Wifi5/Wifi6 wireless module option with on-board PCB antenna and external antenna for industrial applications
  • Designed with B to B connectors for enhanced stability same as RasPi CM4
  • One on-board Gigabit Ethernet design
  • One PCIe interface expansion can flexibly add related modules

The BPI-CM4 will come with 2GB or 4GB of RAM, 16GB to 128GB of eMMC storage, and WiFi 5 or WiFi 6 wireless modules as options.

BPI-CM4 will come with 2GB or 4GB of RAM

A PCIe extension interface, Gigabit Ethernet compatibility, and an HDMI interface with support for up to one 4K monitor are among the other features (a Raspberry Pi CM4, by comparison, supports up to two displays). For cameras and displays, there are additional CSI and DSI connections.

Pricing and availability details haven’t been announced yet, but the fact that we’ve only seen rendered images rather than real-world photos suggests that it could be a while before the BPI-CM4 is ready to ship.
